Maryam’s Keenly Observed Facts of Life (Part 28)

Ethnic people will compliment you if they don’t know you very well. “Oh, that’s a pretty top”
When they get to know you a bit better, they may offer a helpful suggestion along with the compliment. “That’s lovely, have you tried it in pink?”

When they know and love you, they’ll tell you everything that’s wrong with your outfit and your appearance in general. “How do you manage to leave the house looking like that on a daily basis?”

  1. haleem: so what you’re trying to say is, when you give me a compliment, you mean it… is that right? because that’s just idiculous! πŸ™‚

sumera: i generally get all the comments from all my well meaning aunties. everyone needs to comment after the fact. i fail to recognise what purpose it serves.

my dad had brought back some material from Umrah which we used to make suits for Eid last year. the suits were totally beautiful, with little sequin things on them. Mine was peach. Generally when soemthing has stripes on it, you make it so the stripes come across vertically. I chose to make this one horizontally so that the border of the material could stay as part of the kameez. Soon as i walked into this woman’s house, another woman goes, oh, you know you’re meant to make it so the stripes come up vertically… its more slimming. I wanted to punch her.
